Last month, Donald Rumsfeld, who shook hands with Saddam Hussein in 1983, likened this man to Hitler. The Economist distrusts him, and fears he is taking Venezuela – and his neighbours – down the path of something related to communism. At home, opponents openly call him a dictator and yearn for his removal, while his enthralled supporters idolise him. He is Venezuela’s first ever non-white president, Hugo Chavez.
